Many jams were had in my warehouse to piece together this album. Matt and my mutual admiration of Afro-beat and various funk coming out of Africa and South America was the inspiration. I was keen to play with timings and threw some unique rhythmic twists to take us out of the regular 4 and 6 grooves. Playing with valve distortion and mic technique was a big part of why we had so much fun experimenting, and bass clarinet with distortion is my new favorite thing! Matt is such a great improviser and many of the horn lines came from his melodies written on the fly, then layered parts added. I had some pre-recorded ideas that he made sound fantastic and created a whole new layer of inspiration as songs suddenly took shape. The drums were mainly recorded with one or two mics in various rooms and kit configurations. I'm loving how one mic in the right position can be so realistic and pleasing after years of breaking up kit with separate microphones there's something awesome about mono that is so satisfying, especially in this music genre. There was nothing planned or even any outcome in our minds. But this music I thought was to interesting to let sit in my studio and so I'm putting it out there..
